Tamil Nadu Revives Perungalathur Flyover Eight-Lane Project with Rs 12.8 Crore Allocation

The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 12.8 crore to resume the eight-lane expansion project on the Perungalathur flyover. Under the Chennai Metropolitan Development Plan (CMDP), the state’s highway department will upgrade a 1.5 km stretch beneath the flyover to eight lanes. Currently a four-lane route, this section is set for completion by mid-2025. The project will include new drainage systems and the removal of obstructions to enhance connectivity.

The flyover expansion also incorporates new service roads along Gandhi Road in East Tambaram, facilitating access to the bustling Chennai-Trichy highway, which manages a traffic volume of 1.8 lakh vehicles daily. The project includes completing the flyover’s fourth arm, designed to link the Tambaram Eastern Bypass, filling a critical gap in the Eastern Bypass Road infrastructure.

Three arms of the flyover are currently operational, with connections to Srinivasa Raghava Nagar and two lanes parallel to the national highway. The first arm opened in 2022, with two more following in subsequent years.

The eight-lane expansion is expected to ease congestion significantly, especially during peak hours, and improve access to Chennai’s growing southern corridor.
