The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday passed a resolution urging the Centre to immediately revoke the tungsten mining rights granted to Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) in the state. The resolution was passed following a heated debate, with Chief Minister M K Stalin making a strong statement on the issue. Stalin vowed that he would not allow mining in the state under any circumstances, emphasizing its potential threat to both livelihoods and the environment. “Tungsten mining will not be allowed under any circumstances. If this project proceeds, I will not hold the post of Chief Minister,” Stalin said, responding to Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami’s accusations of the state government’s inaction over the past 10 months. Palaniswami had criticized the ruling dispensation for only responding after protests erupted in Melur, Madurai district, where the mining project was to take place.
The resolution, introduced by state Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan, was passed unanimously. The BJP did not oppose the resolution at the introductory stage. The resolution criticized the Centre for disregarding Tamil Nadu’s objections to the mining rights, which were raised in an official communication on October 3, 2023. Despite the state government’s concerns, the Centre proceeded with the auction for the rights to mine tungsten in Nayakkarpatti Village, located in Melur Taluk of Madurai district.
Tamil Nadu’s government strongly condemned the Centre’s decision, pointing out that the area in question had been designated a Bio-Diversity Heritage Site in 2022. The region is also home to several historical monuments, which the resolution stated would be at risk due to mining activities. The state’s opposition to the mining project reflects its commitment to protecting both its natural heritage and the livelihoods of its people.
The debate and resolution mark a significant stand by the Tamil Nadu government against mining in sensitive and ecologically important areas. With strong backing from the assembly, it is now up to the Centre to reconsider its decision and address the concerns raised by the state government.
