Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd., a Miniratna I Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, has joined forces with GATX India Pvt. Ltd., India’s largest private railcar lessor, in a strategic rail logistics partnership. Under this agreement, GATX will lease three BFNS rakes with a capacity of 22.9 tons each to Balmer Lawrie for transporting finished steel products from Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant. Covering over 1,000 kilometers, these rakes will facilitate streamlined transportation.

The signing ceremony took place on November 11 at Balmer Lawrie’s Kolkata headquarters, attended by Chairman and Managing Director Adhip Nath Palchaudhuri, along with GATX’s President and CEO Robert Clair Lyons and other senior officials. This collaboration builds on Balmer Lawrie’s initial agreement with SAIL from September 2024, aligning with their recent entry into rail logistics under Indian Railways Liberalized Special Freight Train Operator (LSFTO) Scheme.

CMD Palchaudhuri highlighted this as a “strategic milestone” on Balmer Lawrie’s path to becoming a Rs 6,000 crore company by 2030. He emphasized that this partnership will help streamline logistics solutions for SAIL, reducing costs and carbon emissions in alignment with the company’s sustainability goals.

In addition to transporting steel, Balmer Lawrie plans to expand its services to include bulk chemicals like caustic soda, supporting the National Rail Plan 2030’s target of increasing rail’s share in freight transport to 45%. This venture underscores Balmer Lawrie’s commitment to growth and sustainable logistics solutions as India’s logistics sector evolves.
