The Coimbatore Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is gearing up to begin preliminary activities for the city’s metro rail project by January-February 2025, with land acquisition notices under Section 3(2) of the Land Acquisition Act scheduled to be issued in March. The project, a transformative initiative for the city’s urban infrastructure, aims to enhance connectivity and support sustainable urban development.

According to CMRL officials, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) outlines the need for acquiring 26 hectares of land. Of this, 10 hectares will be used for constructing metro lines along Avinashi and Sathy roads, while 16 hectares have been earmarked for establishing a depot at Neelambur. These efforts are part of an integrated strategy to ensure efficient connectivity and urban mobility in Coimbatore.

The CMRL is also working closely with the Tamil Nadu Highways Department to align the metro rail development with the proposed flyover extension project up to Neelambur. This collaboration aims to create an integrated infrastructure framework that reduces traffic congestion and improves commuter experience.

In addition to the current plans, the project includes provisions for future metro rail extensions. The proposed extensions will connect Neelambur along the L&T Bypass Road and establish new metro lines along Tiruchi and Mettupalayam roads. These expansions align with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, which focuses on long-term urban connectivity and sustainable transport solutions.

Once completed, the Coimbatore Metro Rail project is expected to transform the city’s public transportation landscape, offering a faster, more reliable, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional commuting methods. It also promises to drive economic growth by boosting real estate and business activities in areas along the metro routes.

With the project taking significant steps forward, Coimbatore residents can look forward to improved urban mobility, reduced traffic woes, and a more sustainable city infrastructure in the coming years.
